A new look for the Mr. Z’s Toy Store Romance series

I’ve been spending some time back at Mr. Z’s Toy Store. I’ve really missed it! So, I’m excited to show you what’s changed. The stories are the same, but the digital Kindle covers have a whole new look!

Don’t Wait For Me first came out in December 2013. Its cover got an update when the sequel, Better Not Love Me, arrived, but there was something I never quite got right. I always wanted the first book to have more of a holiday feel. Christmas is such an important part of the story, and I wanted readers to feel that before they opened the book.

I tried. I just couldn’t get the cover where I wanted it.

I think I have it right this time.

The new Don’t Wait For Me cover puts Mr. Z’s front and center, with green woodwork, cranberry red bows, snow, and warm light spilling from the toy-filled windows. It looks like a place you’d want to step inside on a cold December night in Spokane. That warmth matters. Edwin and Amelia’s story has some difficult moments, but there’s also love, generosity, and the possibility of finding something good when you least expect it.

For Better Not Love Me, we traded snow for sunshine. The lake, dock, beach umbrella, and bright chairs capture the summer Amelia hopes will bring her family closer together. I wanted it to feel inviting and cozy. I wanted to imagine myself sitting by the water. The matching font treatment connects it to the first book, even though we’ve moved into a very different season.

An Easel for Avery brings us back to Christmas in Spokane, this time during the day. The smaller shop window gives us a peek at an easel, paints, and a gift waiting for someone special. It feels hopeful, which fits this prequel short story about a brother determined to give his sister a nice Christmas present.

I included a gallery here so you can see the covers each story has worn over the years. Looking back has been fun. But seeing these three together is my favorite part.

They finally look like they belong to the same family.

I used image-building AI tools to create the covers, which is an inexpensive option for a writing hobby like mine. I’ve used Canva, InDesign and Illustrator for previous covers. I don’t hire this work out. Cover designers are awesome, but as a hobby, it doesn’t pencil out to pay for their keen artistry. There are strong feelings about using AI for creative pursuits, but for my needs, it works just fine. I gave the tool the full text of all three novels to work from and then provided detailed, genre specific prompts to create varied designs and styles. This was a very iterative process. I worked to ensure it told the story I wanted visually. I’ve always been good with words, but terrible at art. It felt great not to be limited by my poor Canva abilities. I can describe what I want and fine tune it with words, not my understanding of RGB and color pallets.

So, I hope the updated covers breathe new life into these three stories, especially Don’t Wait for Me as we head into the holiday season. Send me an email and let me know what you think!

Big Sky Lake series now offers virtual voice with Kindle+

I have good news for anyone who has ever thought, “I’d love to read more, but apparently I’m also supposed to drive places, fold laundry, and occasionally leave this chair.”

Kindle Unlimited is now Kindle+. Cool, new name, but the real news is that virtual voice audiobooks are now included with your subscription. No extra charge to listen to those titles.

And here’s the part I’m especially excited about: that includes all three Big Sky Lake books, plus many of my other novels.

Your next trip to Big Sky Lake can happen with your headphones on. No packing required. You should probably still bring coffee. Same stories. More ways to enjoy them. Read a few chapters on the couch. Listen while you take a walk. Bring a novel along for the commute and give yourself something to look forward to besides arriving. That’s how I do it.

For my books, I get to pick the narration voice. Insider tip, Big Sky Lake books use the American Female #11 voice. No idea why I remember that, but I reviewed a bunch of voices before deciding this computer lady is the voice I needed.

A little secret
Yes, listening counts as reading. I promise.

Whether you’re discovering Big Sky Lake for the first time or coming back for another visit, I’m excited that all three books are included—and that many of my other novels are there for you to explore, too.

Browse my books on Amazon and look for the Kindle+ reading and listening options on the individual book pages.

Pick a story. Grab your headphones. Let the dishes wait until a convenient stopping point.

We all know how that goes.

The day has arrived - Grand Ridge, available now!

Two years in the making, three books so far in the story, and today, October 16, is finally release day! Grand Ridge, the third (but not final) book in the Big Sky Lake Series, is now available in paperback and digital formats.

Each book introduces a new couple while bringing readers back to the same welcoming small-town of Big Sky Lake Montana.

This story is filled with love, ambition, and the tension between the haves and the have-nots. At its heart are a beautiful musician and a handsome ski resort general manager whose lives collide against a wintry mountain backdrop. Expect heartfelt moments, complicated choices, plenty of chemistry, and all the charm of a close-knit community where everyone seems to know everyone else’s business.

So wax those skis and boards, bundle up, and get ready to hit the slopes of Grand Ridge. I’m so excited to share this next chapter of the Big Sky Lake Series with you. ❤️

Book review: Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy

Goodnight Beautiful is a superb domestic thriller that will smack you in the face if you’re not paying close enough attention. And you’ll deserve it, too.

Goodnight Beautiful cover.jpeg

There were more “what the heck?” moments in Aimee Molloy’s Goodnight Beautiful that I can possibly recall. More than once I found myself stopping and re-reading a section to make sure that the twist Molloy just nailed me with was deserved or just a shady sleight of hand. It turns out each time was well deserved.

I’ve said it before—I love to be fooled and Molloy got me with this one. No spoilers here because you should experience it too.

Psychotherapist Sam Statler goes missing after recently returning to his hometown of Chestnut Hill, New York. Sam is recently married, something he and his wife of 13 or so weeks celebrate every single week. Newlyweds, right?

Book Review stars.png

Sam is back in town to help care for his ailing mother and sets up a practice in town in the basement of a beautiful old home with some special quirks.

The journey to find Sam and who we as the reader are trusting, are the driving elements of this exceptionally crafted work of art. There are moments where some of the narration may seem needlessly tedious, but it’s certainly all done for effect and often with a sarcastic wit. One of our unreliable narrators is a real gem.

Some reviewers have (wrongly) compared this novel to one of Stephen King’s most famous works. Again, no spoilers, so figure it out yourself. I will say, King doesn’t own this idea any more than Molloy, who has definitely staked a claim for queen of this genre.

4/5 stars, recommended

Release day is around the corner; I'm pumped

I’m super excited to introduce you to my buddy, James Bell, next week in my new novel An Agreement We Made. James is a stay-at-home dad just trying to keep his three kids on the straight and narrow. Life isn’t so bad, if you don’t count his workaholic wife Tina, who earns a bundle, but physically and emotionally absent. When Tina suddenly dies, my guy’s life is turned upside down. Money – gone. Security – gone. But why? James sets off to figure out why his wife left him and the kids with nothing. The more he digs about his wife, the further he gets from answers.

This is a story about a modern marriage, the lies we tell ourselves to get through the day and the secrets we keep from everyone.

New novel coming June 2, 2021

I’m very excited to announce that on June 2, 2021, I will release my fifth novel, An Agreement We Made. This family life fiction novel has been in the works for nearly three years, and I’m overjoyed to release it on paperback and ebook this summer. Kindle pre-orders are up now on Amazon.

An Agreement We Made
James is a stay-at-home dad, with a comfortable life of dance recitals and school volunteer work, despite his complicated marriage to workaholic Tina. When Tina suddenly dies, James struggles as a single parent to his three children, without the safety net and sizable income his wife once provided. For the sake of his family, he’s forced to return to a past he’d much rather leave alone.

As James’ world crumbles, he begins to question if he ever really knew his wife. Why did she want him to be the primary parent, while she stayed on the fringe of their marriage? And now that she’s gone, will he ever learn why she drained their bank accounts before her death?

An Agreement We Made is an examination of a modern marriage, the lies we tell ourselves to get through the day, and the secrets we keep from everyone.
